First Things First – Day 840

Starry Night in Spite of the Moon – Photo: L. Weikel

First Things First

It was too rainy today to walk. Actually, it wasn’t early on, although the sky was pretty bleak. But I had work to do to follow up with a client. So – first things first.

The day became progressively darker and darker, wetter and wetter. Now, as I sit here on the couch, a warning from The Weather Channel app on my phone pulses a signal to get my attention that sounds like it’s being transmitted from a spaceship. It’s an alert that rain will be arriving within a minute or so and – sure enough, as if on cue – I’m now listening to rain pelting against the living room windows.

Watched a Movie

Not realizing tonight was the Golden Globe Awards, Karl and I watched Nomadland early this evening, finishing it just before the Globes got started.

It’s a great movie. But beyond saying that I wasn’t surprised that it won both Best Director and Best Drama, I’m going to refrain from commenting any further on the film in this post. I have more I think I’d like to say, but I don’t have enough time to say it. And neither the movie nor its subject is something I want to just toss off in a cavalier manner.

It touched me. I liked it. It made me sad.

Looked Up

The other night (geesh, was it just last night? I believe it was), I took a photo of the stars as I looked up from the dirt road we were on as we walked through the woods. We were surprised by the tenacity of the stars in spite of the near blinding brilliance of the full moon.

It felt significant that we could see them so clearly through the haunting reach of the bare-limbed trees.

The silence and beauty surrounding us was breathtaking.
